The present church constructing dates from the late medieval period; construction of the primary area of the church started in about 1267 and was completed in 1340. The successional constructing stored the rules of the floor plan of the original Willigis building and with it the design as a double choir church. St. Stephan is the oldest Gothic hall church within the Upper Rhine district, and is the most important church in the metropolis of Mainz. St. Stephan was originally inbuilt 990 on the order of Archbishop Willigis, who also initiated the constructing of Mainz Cathedral. The church was founded on high of the best hill in the city, more than likely on behalf of Theophanu, the widow of Otto II, Holy Roman Emperor. Willigis meant the church to be a site of prayer for the Empire.
I also wish to thank every of you for being so understanding and caring for one another. It might be nice once we don’t have to put on masks to church anymore, but that time has not but come. When it does come, I think we should have a parish picnic and a ceremonial burning of our masks, whereas we shake one another’s arms and want peace to the other.
